Common questions about condoms

How effective are condoms? Our condoms are electronically-tested for safety. When used correctly every time you have oral, anal, or vaginal sex, condoms are over 98% effective. But, because humans make mistakes, condoms are usually about 87% effective.

How often do condoms break? There’s a very slim chance that a condom breaks during intercourse, but it can happen. Luckily, there’s things you can do to avoid condom breakage like keeping them away from heat and light, not opening them with anything sharp (like scissors or teeth), and avoid using additional oils or lotions on them (our condoms are already lubricated).

What’s the right way to use condoms? There’s no one “right” way to have sex, but there is a right way to use a condom. Follow these steps to make sure you’re having safe sex.

  • Ask for, and receive, consent!

  • Check the expiration date of the condom.

  • Check the wrapper to see if there’s any holes or disturbances to the wrapper. If so, don’t use it.

  • Remove the condom from the package and squeeze air from the tip of the condom.

  • Roll the condom all the way down to the base of the erect penis.

  • Have sex! (The best step).

  • After ejaculation, hold the rim of the condom and withdraw.

  • Wrap the condom in a tissue, throw it out, and wash your hands.

Should I keep a condom in my wallet/bag? It’s a great idea to keep a condom in a safe and accessible place when you’re on the go. But make sure it’s stored somewhere where it won’t get crushed, ripped, or tarnished.

What material are the condoms made of? Condoms are made out of different materials, but Stix condoms are made out of ultra thin latex.

How to use a condom

1. To open the foil, tear the package carefully using your thumbs and forefingers. Do not use your fingernails, teeth, or anything that can damage the condom.

2. Gently remove the condom from the package ensuring that the reservoir tip of the condom (the pointy part) faces away from the tip of the penis.

3. Before any sexual contact, you or your partner can place the condom on the head of the erect penis. Being fully erect helps make sure that it fits correctly!

4. Squeeze the tip of the condom between the thumb and index finger to remove any air. This helps prevent the condom from splitting. Lesions, pre-ejaculate secretions, semen, vaginal secretions, and blood can all transmit infectious organisms.

5. Unroll or pull the condom all the way to the base of the erect penis. If the condom doesn't unroll easily, you may have it inside out or it may be damaged or old. You’ll need to start over with a new condom if this happens.

6. After ejaculation, hold the condom at the base while the penis is still erect so that it doesn’t slip off or spill. Then, when fully withdrawn, take the condom off.

7. Dispose of the condom by wrapping it in tissue and throwing it into the trash — don’t flush down the toilet! Afterwards, wash your hands with soap and water.

Storage tips

  • Store in a cool, dry place below 100°F and avoid exposure to direct sunlight.

  • Check the foil pouch before use. Don’t use the condom if it’s expired, opened, damaged, uneven or changed color, sticky or brittle rubber material.

  • Use each condom only once. Do not reuse.

  • Use a new condom for each act of sex.

  • Keep out of reach of children.
